Senior Editor
Background
Due to expansion our client is looking for a Senior Editor to be part of their Medical Communications team in Worthing.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
The Senior Editor will be expected to write and/or edit publication manuscripts, slide kits, monographs, newsletters, and congress/exhibit materials based on research conducted in specialised areas of medical science. Throughout the development of assigned programs, the Senior Editor is responsible for assuring the quality of content and format, as well as liaising appropriately with both faculty and client. For specific projects, the Senior Editor serves as the primary editorial contact for both in-house staff and client, with responsibility for assuring the completion of these projects on time and within budget. In addition, a Senior Editor/Writer may be asked to mentor less experienced editorial personnel.
Responsibilities Include:
• Write manuscripts for medical/scientific publications in accordance with agreed brief and the following criteria:
Appropriate interpretation of dataHighest scientific accuracyIncorporation of client/product messages Accurate citing of primary references
• Write other types of manuscripts, eg, patient information brochures, news reports, press releases, image brochures
• Edit existing manuscripts to give maximum clarity of meaning, accuracy, relevance, and consistency of style and format to ensure that client objectives are met and overall quality standards are maintained
• Research medical/scientific topics, utilizing the various information services available, including in-house resources, libraries, and databases
• Assimilate and utilise specialist knowledge, including that relating to disease area, product, opinion leaders, meetings, and journals
• Communicate effectively and sensitively to other team members and other internal departments
• Liaise with clients and faculty in a diplomatic, informed manner, projecting an efficient, capable, professional image at all times
• Participate in team meetings
• Chair internal editorial progress meetings, as appropriate
• Budgeting
• Contribute to the budgeting process as requested by the Editorial
• Leader/Associate Editorial Director or Editorial Director
• Be aware of the budget specifications for all assigned projects, working within the budgeted hours and communicating any changes to specification to client finance and the Editorial Leader
• Training/Development Contribute to the evaluation, training and development of Editor/Writers, as requested by Editorial Leader
• Business Awareness Develop and maintain a basic understanding of the company's core capabilities, services, and products in order to contribute, in conjunction with editorial colleagues, to client solutions
Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge
The ideal candidate should be able demonstrate an understanding of the following qualities and have proven skills in the specific areas noted:
• Bachelor of Science in the life sciences; higher degree preferred
• Experience in professional medical writing/editing; largely in an agency environment
• Broad-ranging writing skills
• Ability to understand and implement marketing messages
• Proven copy editing and proofreading skills
• Effective communication/interpersonal skills
• Computer literacy, familiarity with EndNote helpful
• Willingness to travel to attend client meetings, international congresses, etc
Specific Experience in Relation to Editor
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and assume extensive responsibility for specific projects
• Broad-ranging writing skills, with experience of the majority of editorial services provided by the organisation MMS but to include significant experience in technical writing (posters, manuscripts, monographs), meetings materials, post-meeting publications, slide kits and multimedia activities. • Skills in interpreting and organizing scientific data, including experience of making recommendations to client regarding scientific strategy, data analyses etc
• Ability to contribute to the development of marketing messages and how these are communicated to different audiences
• Proven ability to multitask, running multiple projects and programs in parallel
• Authoritative client liaison skills
• Ability to effectively brief and mentor other members of staff
• A good knowledge of the editorial processes in order to make sound judgments on project management issues, and identify solutions to client issues
• Proven ability to interact and negotiate effectively and sensitively with colleagues, clients and faculty
